Description

OptiBeam OB5-6 5-Element 6m The OptiBeam OB5-6 is a highly efficient 5-element monoband Yagi for the 6-meter band (50 MHz). It has been developed and optimized using modern computer-aided design tools and then carefully fine-tuned through extensive real-world testing. The goal of the design is to provide a particularly stable and high-performance antenna with consistently strong electrical characteristics across the entire usable frequency range. The antenna design is based on the proven OWA (Optimum Working Area) concept. The OB5-6 features a boom length of approximately 0.73 λ and consists of one reflector, one driven element, and three directors. The first director is placed relatively close to the driven element, while the other two directors are spaced further apart. This combination of close and wide element spacing results in high gain, an excellent front-to-back ratio, and remarkable stability of these values throughout the entire band. A key characteristic of the OB5-6 is its very low standing wave ratio from the lower to the upper end of the band. This ensures efficient power transfer and makes operation with modern transceivers and amplifiers much easier. At the same time, the radiation pattern remains stable across the frequency range, which is especially beneficial under the varying band conditions typical of the 6-meter band. The antenna is designed as a robust and durable directional antenna for fixed amateur radio installations. Its mechanical construction is built for strength and weather resistance, ensuring reliable performance even under demanding environmental conditions. Despite its strong electrical performance, the overall size remains within a range that can be easily supported by standard masts and rotators. The OptiBeam OB5-6 is aimed at radio amateurs seeking maximum performance on the 6-meter band—whether for DX operation, sporadic-E openings, contesting, or simply to achieve a significant improvement in directivity compared to simple wire or vertical antennas. By combining a carefully engineered OWA design, high efficiency, and solid mechanical construction, it represents a high-quality, long-term solution for demanding 50 MHz operating scenarios.
